Home Activity
Read at least ten books in English with no Japanese notes, and write a paper on each book. ("Ten books" does not mean "ten stories." A collection of short stories will be counted in volumes. One book always means just one book.)
At least 10 books must belong to the category 1 shown below. In those ten books, at least 100 pages of them must be the original version written for native speakers. If you read 11 or more books, you can choose the 11th, 12th or 13th ones from Category 2.
If you read two different versions of one same story or novel, they will be counted as two different books. You must read, including category 2, at least 1,000 pages.
Category 1: Simplified or original versions of books whose authors are found in James D. Hart's The Oxford Companion to American Literature or The Concise Oxford Companion to American Literature.
Category 2: any other books in English with no Japanese notes.
Your paper must be a book review in which you prove you have read the book through. Write how many pages the book has. You do not have to do the exercises if the book has any. The paper must be written in MLA style. Although many books and pahmphlets explaining the MLA style have been published, you should use the ones published after 1982.
The paper must be given to me on or before the deadlines shown in the schedule. Sending a paper by electronic mail will be strongly encouraged.
Class Activity
Give a recitation, saying aloud from memory, of a poem from Donald Hall's The Oxford Book of Children's Verse in America, at least once in the year, in front of the class.
Give booktalk, a speech on a book you have read, in front of the class, at least once, and answer questions by your friends. On a week with no booktalker, the class will not be held and everyone will be counted as absent.
